Deacons: The Ministry of Compassion and Service

Deacon Defined:
"The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry".
                                                                (from Book of Order -G-2.0201)

The name "deacon" comes from the Greek word for servant and is the oldest office in the Christian church. Our 14 member board of ordained deacons are charge with serving members of our congregation and the community at large with compassion and mercy for all. Whether it is delivering items to the food pantry or Christmas presents to families in our community, our Board of Deacons is constantly serving with grace and vitality. Deacons reach out to members who are hospitalized or our shut-ins, deliver sandwiches to Cathedral Kitchen, send cards to people celebrating personal milestones, or grieving a loss. The deacons prepare the Communion elements, oversee the chancel flowers, and sponsor a Graduation luncheon, Sunshine luncheon, and Christmas decorating brunch. Our deacons are faithful servants, serving the Lord with gladness.
